The Lotus Mana Center is excited to invite you to Makahiki: Lead with Aloha. Join us in learning how you can foster leadership in your communities with Makahiki values and make a lei po'o (lei worn on the head).
As the celestial twinkle of Makali’i rises (or the constellation Pleiades) and becomes visible during sunset, this marks the beginning of the Hawaiian New Year called Makahiki. Makahiki is a time of celebration, renewal, rest, abundance, peace, and connectedness with people and the land. During this (usually) four-month celebration, locals take this time to honor the God of Agriculture, Peace, and Fertility, Lono. Some activities that celebrate aspects of Lono include competing in games and sports, storytelling, feasting, enjoying live music, and offering a variety of items, like food, livestock, and leis. Historically, high chiefs of the land would gather to welcome, honor, and protect Lono’s beautifully carved staff called akua loa. Locals also take the opportunity to reflect, acknowledge, and feel pride in the bountiful land that provides for us.
In this celebration, we would like to honor the ancestral land, rich culture, and the indigenous people of Hawaii. We are here to recognize and demonstrate respect for the history, traditions, ceremonies, and cultural expressions that make Hawaii uniquely beautiful.
